My Love Affair with Argentina
Since my first visit in 1995, Argentina has captivated me like no other place in the Americas. It remains a favorite destination I return to often.
Now, I invite you to join me and my Argentinian colleague, Nicholas Tinelli, on an immersive photography workshop in the vibrant heart of Buenos Aires. Together we’ll explore the city’s iconic neighborhoods—each alive with stories waiting to be captured. From colorful colonial streets and bustling markets to intimate tango scenes and bold street art, this journey will sharpen your photographic eye while deepening your cultural insight.
Often called “the Paris of South America,” Buenos Aires enchants with its Beaux-Arts mansions, neoclassical palaces, wide boulevards, and thriving cultural life. The Teatro Colón, world-class street art, and a renowned theatre scene reflect its artistic soul. As we walk across neighborhoods like Recoleta and Retiro, it feels as if they were lifted out of the illustrated pages of a 19th-century Paris or Madrid.
Tango, born in San Telmo and celebrated in La Boca’s lively Caminito, remains the city’s heartbeat—an art form of passion, longing, and national pride. Whether photographed in a quiet milonga or on a vibrant street corner, it’s a cultural ritual like no other.
We’ll also visit Palermo’s hip cafés and murals, and Recoleta’s aristocratic avenues, crowned by the famous cemetery where Eva Perón rests.
Buenos Aires is a city of contrasts—elegant yet raw, historic yet modern. With its mix of old-world charm and creative energy, it offers endless inspiration for photographers and explorers alike.

We'll cross the historic gate-drawbridge Portón de Campo built in 1745 and from there walk to the Barrio Histórico. Its dramatic entrance will set the tone and offers striking shots of historic fortifications and early morning light. From there we'll head to Calle de los Suspiros (“Street of Sighs”). It is Colonia’s most photographed lane, steeply paved with wedge stones and flanked by low stone houses framed by bougainvillaea and vintage lamps. A perfect place for framing the right image.
Break for lunch.
We will climb the 100 stairs to the top of El Faro Lighthouse, built in the midโ1800s atop 17thโcentury convent ruins. It will give us sweeping views of the town, the Río de la Plata, and—on clear days in front and across from us, Buenos Aires skyliner.
Next destination will be Plaza Mayor (Plaza de Armas)—a leafy central square overlooking the Basilica del Santísimo Sacramento (Uruguay’s oldest church)—to capture relaxed street life, church façades, and café moments for photos and also us to chill out. While we enjoy our time at the café, anyone is welcome to wander the side streets, where vintage cars are causally parked against pastel façades add nostalgic charm. Plenty of great Kodak moments everywhere.
Late afternoon We will stroll along the riverfront Rambla de Colonia or head to the Bastión de San Pedro viewpoint, where sunset reflections over the Río de la Plata and the silhouetted island of San Gabriel make for cinematic compositions. Those who love long exposure, a tripod is required, we will walk to pier at riverside for long exposures of moored boats and tranquil water at dusk—a perfect close to your photographic exploration
For dinner we will try the classic chivito sandwich, or any of other cuisine, at a local café. Afterwards we'll take the ferry back to Buenos Aires.
